Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 22, 2026
freestate.app (“we,” “us”) indexes New Hampshire by town — local discovery, events, endeavors, civic action, groups, and conversation. This policy explains what we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.
This is the policy we publish for members and visitors. Admins can update the wording; when we do, the date above should change.
The short version
- We do not sell your personal data.
- We do not buy advertising audiences with your profile.
- We collect what you volunteer and what is needed to run the product (account, content you post, basic service logs).
- You control key visibility settings (including home-town proximity and relationship visibility).
- You can ask us to export or delete your data through our data-rights flow, or email support@freestate.app.
Who this applies to
This policy covers freestate.app websites, apps, and related services we operate. It does not cover third-party sites or partner organizations we link to; those speak for themselves.
Information we collect
Account and profile
When you create an account or edit your profile, we may store information such as:
- Email address and authentication data (handled by our auth provider)
- Display name, slug, bio, and avatar or banner images you upload
- Home town / residency fields you set (and related visibility preferences)
- Optional legal name for political actions (for example petitions), when you choose to provide it
- Notification and marketing preferences (for example partner promotional email opt-in)
Google Sign-In and other social login
You may create or sign in to an account using Google (or another identity provider we enable). When you choose Google Sign-In, Google shares basic profile information with us—typically your name, email address, and profile photo—so we can create and authenticate your freestate.app account. We use that information only for account creation, sign-in, security, and providing the freestate.app service. We do not sell Google user data, do not use it for advertising, and do not request Google scopes beyond what is needed to sign you in. You can disconnect social login or request deletion through our data-rights process.
Content you create
Listings, events, posts, comments, chat messages, RSVPs, check-ins, reports, and similar content you submit are stored so the product can show them to you and to others according to visibility and moderation rules.
Usage and security signals
To keep the service reliable and safe, we may process:
- Approximate device and browser information, IP address, and request metadata
- Sign-in and anti-abuse signals (for example rate limits and spam controls)
- Product analytics that do not require selling your identity to ad networks
We aim to avoid real-time location tracking. Location context comes from places and residency you choose, not continuous GPS surveillance.
Payments
If you purchase boosts, memberships, or similar paid features, payment processors (such as Stripe) handle card details. We receive billing status and related metadata needed for access and support — not your full card number.
Information we do not seek out
We do not require ideology inventories, demographic checklists, phone contact books, or off-platform group memberships unless you add them yourself. We do not place third-party advertising pixels (Google Analytics, Meta, LinkedIn Insight, and similar) on member-facing routes.
How we use information
We use personal data to:
- Provide and improve freestate.app (profiles, discovery, events, chats, civic tools)
- Authenticate you and protect accounts
- Moderate abuse, spam, and safety issues
- Send transactional messages and, only with consent where required, optional digests or partner promotional email
- Meet legal obligations and enforce our terms and community standards
- Produce aggregate, non-identifying insights (for example public scoreboard honesty metrics that respect consent flags)
Sharing
We do not sell personal information. We share data only when needed to operate the service, including:
- Service vendors under contracts appropriate to the work — for example hosting and database (such as Vercel and Supabase), email delivery (such as Resend), payments (such as Stripe), and web push infrastructure
- Other members, when you post public or group-visible content, or when visibility settings allow (for example a public profile or town-level scoreboard appearance you consented to)
- Moderators and admins, to review reports, safety issues, and data-rights requests
- Legal requirements, if we are compelled by valid law and believe disclosure is required
Movement partners listed on About pages are independent organizations. Cross-links or calendar integrations do not mean we hand them your account database.
Visibility and controls
In Privacy settings you can adjust home-town visibility, political legal-name linking, partner promotional email opt-in, and related preferences. Public content you publish may remain visible to others until you remove it or it is moderated. Some civic or community surfaces require explicit consent flags before your name or town appears in aggregated public views.
Analytics
We prefer privacy-preserving, first-party analytics (for example self-hosted Umami) over advertising trackers. Analytics should help us understand product usage in aggregate, not build resaleable advertising profiles.
Retention and deletion
We keep account and content data while your account is active and as needed to provide the service, resolve disputes, and meet legal duties. Member-initiated hard-delete and support-assisted data-rights requests are available; timelines and fulfillment details are handled through our data-rights process. Email support@freestate.app if you need help.
Some records may be retained in anonymized or limited form where needed for integrity (for example historical leadership assignment rows with identifiers removed).
Children
freestate.app is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact support@freestate.app so we can delete it.
Security
We use industry-standard practices appropriate to a modern web application (encrypted transport, access controls, and vendor security features). No online service can guarantee absolute security; please use a strong unique password and protect your sign-in methods.
International visitors
We operate with a New Hampshire / United States focus. If you access the service from elsewhere, you understand your information may be processed in the United States and other regions where our vendors operate.
Changes
We may update this policy as the product evolves. Material changes will be reflected on this page with an updated date. Continued use after changes means you accept the revised policy, except where applicable law requires a different process.
